ferns

April 10, 2017

Last spring I bought 3 Kimberly Queen ferns for a total cost of roughly $50 (ouch!). They filled in a bare spot in front of our porch and looked perfect there. Not wanting to have to repurchase more ferns this year, I cut them back and moved them inside when the weather started getting too cold.

So they have been sitting on a window ledge in the laundry room, which gets quite a bit of bright, indirect sunlight. Over the winter we did notice new sprouts popping up occasionally.

The weather here is finally feeling like spring, so I moved them outside today to get them acclimated to being outdoors again. Fingers crossed that they come back to their full glory. It seems like I read that nighttime temps should be in the 50s before moving them back out. We are hovering in high 40s/50s at night right now, so I will do it gradually. Do you guys have any experience with overwintering ferns indoors? Any tips?

I have not overwintered fern, but, it looks like yours are doing great.

At least they are still alive, haha. I’ll keep you posted on how they do as spring progresses.
