Wow! Is it November already?? Are you prepared for the coming winter? Here is what I will be working on in the garden this month.
Depending on your location, here are some other things you might consider at this time of year:
- save seed for next year
- clean and drain pond gardens (unless you have fish or other wildlife that depends on the pond)
- clean greenhouse glass (if you are one of the luckies who has a greenhouse!)
- thoroughly clean and oil garden sprayer, replacing any worn out parts (does anyone do this?? or do we just get a new one? kudos to those who take the time to replace parts)
- plant trees
- harvest any frost sweetened crops you were growing (Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, kale)
- and, this is the last chance to plant spring flowering bulbs
Truly, a gardener’s work is never done. And that is just how we like it!

We feed the birds and the squirrels. However I never try to attract deer to the garden. They are creatures of habit. Once they are used coming to the garden they will continue to do so. So if you don’t want them to eat the summer plants do not invite them into the garden over the winter. I made a fish line fence around the bird feeder to keep the deer out. It has one extra side to make a cattle or deer gate so I can walk in and they can not. The do not like walking into things they cannot see. So the fish line works just fine to keep them away.
Makes perfect sense. I agree about not deliberately attracting deer to the garden. They come through enough all on their own. Some folks enjoy having them around enough to attract them I suppose. I’ve heard that fishing line is very effective, and will try that out one of these days. Thanks for the tip!
