Greetings!
As we enter into winter, my little kitchen window sill herb garden is currently barren. Usually, there is at least some basil growing in one of these pots and often dill, oregano, or another herb.
Missing the readily available fresh herbs, I’m seeding the pots this week. I’m lucky that my kitchen window has a southeast exposure, so the plants get plenty of light. Note that the photo below is NOT the kitchen window, it’s in the dining room. I couldn’t get a good photo in the kitchen – too much reflection, so I moved my planter for its photo shoot.
I wasn’t sure if the timing would be okay for seeding right now, or if it even mattered since the plants will be strictly indoors. If memory serves, I’ve always started my indoor herbs in the spring or summer, when starting other veggie seeds. At this time of year, starting from seed is really the only option here, as the garden centers no longer have plants available.

The hardest part is deciding what to plant. I have only three pots in this little window sill herb garden, so I had to narrow it down. Otherwise, it is just like starting most things from seed – warm temps and moisture are key. After sowing the seeds into the soil, I will cover them with a layer of plastic wrap to create a greenhouse effect and keep the temperature warm enough until the seeds germinate.
Here is a great little article that goes step by step on how to plant basil seeds: https://howtoculinaryherbgarden.com/grow-basil-from-seed-indoors/
I am planting parsley, basil, and oregano.
I will keep you posted on how they do!
