2019 garden plans

December 31, 2018

Happy New Year! Are you going to ring it in tonight??

I am doing my usual – goal planning. And I have a BUNCH of plans for the garden for 2019. Here they are in black and white:

1. Put a rain barrel into use for the veggie garden. A dear friend gave us a barrel several years back and I am ashamed to say that it is still sitting there, waiting for us to get it going already. This is the year!
2. Build a cedar plank bridge to the veggie garden. The veggie garden is accessed by walking across a small gully that feeds the pond. This means that it can be muddy trying to get to the garden.
3. Continue clearing out the brush and weedy areas at the top of the pond. The pond is situated in front of the house a ways. It has been overgrown since before we moved in. Here is a photo from a few years back. The brush actually looks pretty sparse in this photo, but this same view now, you can’t really even see the pond much. The former owner of this property told us that there is a rock garden under all the brush. We have seen glimpses of it when walking through and we are eager to uncover it and restore it to its former glory.

4. Build a cold frame…because, winter vegetables. If you have done this before and have a good set of plans or instructions, please feel free to share 🙂
5. Clean up the overlooked butterfly garden and expand it. I began this little garden years ago and then neglected to keep up with it. Here is a short video from 2016, in which I attempted to revive it, then AGAIN neglected it. Shame shame shame on me.
6. Uncover the secret garden. When the man and I bought this place in 2012, we were excited to learn that there is an actual secret garden here. It was created to host the wedding of the man who built this place. I haven’t really shown any pics because the entrance is overgrown and it feels like playing Twister (with brambles and thorns no less!) to get inside of the space. This is going to be an ongoing project once it begins and I will be sure to post pics of the progress.
7. Start a fairy garden. I started a Pinterest board dedicated to this, here!
8. Begin planting in the new side bed that runs along the house. If you missed it in the last post, here is a photo showing the bed looking from the front of the house towards the back and a link with a couple more pics.

9. Birdscape a couple of areas. More on that later!

Well, that will keep me (and the man, of course!) busy. My thought is that putting it all down here will encourage me to get it done.

What are your garden plans this year? Hope your 2019 gets off to a fantastic start!
