For a few years now, I’ve done my indoor seed starting using one of the those portable greenhouses. It was given to me by a friend who didn’t use it. I promptly said Yes! when he offered it to me. My friend had gotten it secondhand and a couple of the frame pieces were already broken, but it held up well enough for a while. After a few good years, it finally became too unstable to use. The plastic frame pieces seem to be somewhat on the fragile side and enough of them had broken that the unit would not stand upright any longer.
This year I ordered a new one from amazon. I’m excited to have a brand new, stable greenhouse for starting my seeds this year. These little units are inexpensive and small, but effective. If you have a spot near a south-facing window, they are perfect for seed starting. Then when the seedlings are ready to come out, the greenhouse can easily be relocated to the basement, shed, garage, etc, for storage.
I set my little greenhouse up in our laundry room where it gets enough light, at least for the top two tiers. Using a heating mat under the seed tray helps as well. When seed starting is finished, I can carry it right down to the basement for storage. I don’t even disassemble it. It is lightweight and easy to carry while still assembled. By leaving it standing while in basement storage, I can keep all my seed starting supplies tucked away on the shelves inside it until next year.
Of course, I dream of something like this from the blog downtoearthdigs.com or this one featured on Apartment Therapy:
And one day I will have a beautiful greenhouse out on the property. But for now, this little one does the job for me just fine!
