Did you know that the way you garden can directly impact the behavior and even the survival of bird populations?
I’ve been trying to get some good photos of the birds around here, but the camera is never ready when the birds are!
Here are some easy things we gardeners can do to make a difference:
- make good use of bird feeders. My fave right now is this one from Brome.
- plant native plants in our gardens and landscape. I recently posted on native plants, here.
- provide a good water source for the birds. Birdbaths are one way to do this. Bird Watchers Digest has an informative article, here.
- create a habitat for the insects that birds feed on. I’m still looking into this one and will post when I have more info.
If you are interested in learning more, the National Audubon Society is a great source of information.
I’m planning to install some native plants this year and maybe even a birdbath. Although we have a pond, I’m not sure that is the best way to provide water to most of the bird species. We see some really BIG birds there from time to time (great blue heron, ducks), but maybe a bird bath would be better for the smaller, more common birds.
Are there any other things that you guys do to encourage and assist the birds?
