Still upping the seedling game, I’ve added a fan to my setup.
The primary reason for using a fan is to maintain good air circulation, thereby reducing the risk of diseases caused by too much moisture. I’ve also read that using a fan can help the seedlings become stronger, sturdier.
Intrigued by this, I looked into it a bit more. According to www.gardeningknowhow.com:
“This tricks the plant into thinking that it is growing in a windy environment and releases chemicals in the plant to grow thicker stems to be better able to withstand the supposed windy environment.”
Other sources provide essentially the same information.
The fan I am using is this one from Amazon. It is a clip-on, two-speed model. It runs very quietly on the low setting. I ordered two of them, since I will be adding a second level of grow lights to my setup in the next week or so.
Something I will need to be aware of with the fan is that it may dry the soil out more quickly. This does seem to be the case and I’ll have to be diligent with watering. Of course, I’m always checking on these little guys, which will give me plenty of opportunity to check the soil. I noticed they were a bit dry this evening and added some water to their trays.
Meanwhile, my other two seedling trays are still in the greenhouse, awaiting the new grow lights. I’m keeping the covers off and the greenhouse flap open to prevent the moisture issue.
And our laundry room will continue to look like this until late April or so:
Have you used fans for seedlings?
