thoughtful thursday: the farmer’s plight

June 27, 2019

While we are starting to see the sun here in southwestern Ohio, the farmers in the northwestern part of the state are still facing hardships due to all the rain we have had this season. Forty-five percent of all of Ohio’s corn is grown in this part of the state. A lot of the farmland is under water and unable to be planted, well into June.

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer:

“It’s already the wettest yearlong period in Ohio since 1895. For the first six months of the year, the state’s seen about 10 inches more than the mean for the last decade. It’s already been called disastrous. In June, Gov. Mike DeWine’s requested a USDA Disaster Designation for Ohio farmers impacted by heavy rainfall.”

This has been devastating for these farmers and the impact will likely be felt at every touchpoint downstream in the supply chain. The following news article has some great detail around this issue, as seen from the farmer’s point of view: https://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/2019/06/19/corn-trouble-and-midwest-rain-its-too-wet-and-farmers-behind/1486263001/

To add to what is already an inherently risky, demanding job, the extreme weather pattern is taking a huge toll on the farmers, with regard to both economics and morale.
