Although the trees still look bleak, it was a gorgeous day to take a walk through the woods. It’s not yet spring, but Mother Nature is giving us a tease, as the temperature was 70F today and the sun was shining down. The wind has been howling and I can hear it now, as the windows are wide open in the studio.
I’ve been rereading Simple Abundance by Sarah Ban Breathnach since the beginning of the year. Such a great book for reminding us to appreciate the daily rhythm of life and the sacredness of nature. Today, she talks to us about the importance of creating a sacred space…”a place where you can simply experience and bring forth what you are, and what you might be” (quote from the book, attributed to Joseph Campbell).
Even for those of us whose indoor space may not lend itself to personal, private places, nature is there for us. She might take the form of a city park, a backyard deck or neighborhood streets. One of my earliest experiences with the outdoors was a derelict, long-abandoned army barracks a short bike ride away from my home at the time. The fields had grown up around the crumbled foundations, and amidst the rubble there were butterflies visiting the wildflowers. And dragonflies. Beauty in unexpected places.
It was a playground for us kids, but what remains in my memory today, is the peacefulness and stillness of that place. I am pretty sure that area has since been paved over and built upon, but back then – it was a sacred space.
I hope that each of us is able to create a sacred space no matter where we might be.
