october garden activities

October 8, 2018

Hi all! We are well into October and I meant to post this sooner…here is what I am working on in my Zone 6 garden this month. Some of these tasks are carryovers from last month.

October garden activities (Zone 6)

Some other things that one might consider doing at this time of year:

  • Save excess seed for next year. (I’m still not seed-saving…yes, yes, I know. I will get there.)
  • Make sure to cover tender plants when frosts are forecast. Use blankets, sheets or protective cloths. (I will have all my tender plants inside before frost hits.)
  • Squeeze in a few last sowings of spinach and other cold-hardy greens, beneath row covers or coldframes. (I have some greens already in the ground to harvest, but I am not putting in additional at this time.)
  • Mulch leeks with thick layer of straw before first hard freeze. This will allow the soil to remain workable to harvest leeks throughout the winter. (Didn’t do leeks this year.)

Keep in mind that these are all appropriate if one’s garden is located in similar (to my garden) climate situation. Our first frost date here averages around mid-late October. The way the heat is still going this year, I am not sure what to expect. Sometimes you just have to play it by ear.
