my 2019 seed order – too much?

January 11, 2019

Have you ordered seeds for your garden yet? I placed my order this past weekend – one of the most fun things to do during that bleak, somewhat boring month of January. There are a few seed companies that I love, mentioned in a previous post here.

Before ordering, I start by going through my existing seeds to see what I have and what I need. I still have a bunch of seeds from 2016, 2017, and 2018 that will be perfectly viable this year. So many, in fact, that I really don’t think I NEEDED to order more seeds…same as, I don’t NEED to buy books, don’t NEED to take on another sewing project, don’t NEED to add another raised bed to the garden, don’t NEED to… some things just are the way they are and that is that.

So, here is what I ordered this year:

And I thought I was finished. Was going to just stop right there. THEN, a coworker told me about a company call Rancho Gordo. They specialize in heirloom beans. So…not being able to resist checking out a new seed source, I paid their site a visit. They sell the beans for the purposes of cooking them, but state that they are also suitable for planting. The beans jumped into my cart and that was all she wrote. Their shipping costs are kind of steep, but considering it is 3lb of beans, I guess it’s kind of heavy. I can cook some and plant some, and then harvest the seeds to keep the stock going each year.

NOW, I am finished. And as I do every year, I will give a bunch of my older seeds away to friends and coworkers who are just starting out in their gardening life. I love to encourage new gardeners!

I am giddy thinking about my garden this year. Do you ever feel that way too?
