This week I am digging the first seedlings to pop up…tomatoes, brussels sprouts, and onions.
One of the podcasts that I listen to regularly is The joe gardener Show by Joe Lamp’l. His episode this week is a gem, chock full of good tips on starting seeds indoors.
Today I implemented one of the tips from this episode. He suggests that once the first few seedlings emerge, to go ahead and remove the clear plastic cover that was used to hold the heat and moisture in, even if the other seeds in that same tray haven’t sprouted yet. I used to keep the cover on until they had all sprouted. In doing that I was setting my seedlings up for a fungal disease called “damping off”. This occurs when the environment remains too moist.
I moved two of my trays to my new grow light setup and there are two trays in the greenhouse still to germinate. It looks like I might need another set of lights to accommodate all of my seedling trays. Guess I’ll be getting an add-on unit to my base set come next payday. Darn, I hate when I have to get more gardening gear (not!).
Have a great weekend!
