thoughtful thursday: love what you have

April 11, 2019

Today’s post was prompted by a new-to-me book I am reading called “Love the Home You Have” by Melissa Michaels. You can check out her blog, The Inspired Room.

One of her key tenets is that we can be very happy in our current home, all the while making it our dream home, even if it may be too small, in a bad location, is a rented place, etc.

This message resonates with me. I’ve been on a remodeling stint of our home for the past year and a half. I already do love our home so much and I’m so thankful to be here. However, there are things I want to change and the changes can’t happen fast enough. Melissa points out that having to make the changes slowly due to constraints outside of our control, is actually a good thing. By going more slowly, we are afforded the time to really think about what we like and what is best for the house and our situation, which helps reduce costly mistakes.

I think this wisdom applies to the garden as well. I have purchased many a plant in my 20+ years of gardening, only to find out that it was not a good choice and all did not end well for the plant. Getting to know the garden first before making sweeping changes allows the garden to grow in the best way. It does take real restraint to add in plants, shrubs, trees slowly. Especially in the spring when those nurseries and garden centers are opening up and all those plants are just waiting to come home with me. Patience, grasshopper. In the meantime, I am loving my garden just the way it is and dreaming of ways to bring out the very best in it.

What are you thinking about today?
