favorite gardening podcasts, pt 1

May 21, 2019

Some of the best gardening advice I’ve been given over the years has come from personal friends and mentors. Second best might just be from podcasts. Oh, and books of course!

But today, let’s focus on podcasts. I listen to many of them, on topics ranging from vegetarianism to religion to entrepreneurism to, you guessed it, home and garden.

I’d have to say that my two favorite garden-related ones are: A Way to Garden (Margaret Roach) and The joe gardener Show (Joe Lamp’l). If you are interested, here is a bit of description of each of these. I whole-heartedly recommend these for all of my fellow gardeners!

A Way to Garden
I love Margaret Roach so much. I have three of her books and just love her writing style and her podcasting style. From her about page, she has been podcasting since 2008, although I found her only a few years ago. Most of her episodes consist of interviews with garden experts in many of the diverse fields (overwintering plants, insects, culinary experts who cook what they grow, etc).

Snippets from Margaret’s about page:
“A Way to Garden is the latest horticultural incarnation of me, Margaret Roach, birthed in March 2008 with my own words as its primary DNA, mingled with ideas shared in weekly expert interviews. Those conversations are from the companion A Way to Garden public-radio show and podcast, which entered its ninth year in March 2018, and has won praise from “The Guardian” newspaper and multiple medals from Garden Writers of America.

I have been writing about gardening for about 30 years. In my previous lives, I was garden editor at “Newsday” newspaper (one of the country’s largest dailies) and then for Martha Stewart, where I was the first garden editor of “Living” magazine and later EVP/Editorial Director of her magazines, books and internet.”

The joe gardener Show

This podcast is up to 100+ episodes now. I’ve been listening to Joe’s podcast for several months now, maybe close to a year. I would say that if you are looking for good, basic (and often, advanced) how-to advice, this is the one to listen to.

Excerpt from Joe’s about page:
“After a run-in with my parents’ favorite shrub, I panicked and jammed the broken branch into the ground. A few weeks later, it had taken root. I was not only relieved; I was hooked on horticulture. From there I couldn’t get enough information about growing plants. I was a sponge for book knowledge and practical application. And I was only eight years-old! I propagated, planted, and grew everything I could get my hands on.”

There are a few more gardening podcasts that I love, which is why this post is called “pt 1”. I’m planning a second post for the (hopefully near) future to cover the other ones.

What are your favorite podcasts?
