This week I am taking a hard look at our household expenses. We’ve done well over the past few years with reducing some costs, while others have gone up. I am “keeping it real” in this post…read on.
When the figures were tallied, my eyes were opened when I looked at how much I spend each year on gardening: it averages right around 1K per year since 2015 (don’t have the numbers readily available prior to that).
But back to that figure for a moment – $1000 – Say what?!?
How can that even be?? I keep a general budget and log most of our expenses to make sure we are staying within reason. So…that figure includes ALL garden-related purchases. Veggie seeds, raised bed building materials, fruit trees, decorative trees, landscaping plants and materials, mulch, soil, equipment, tools, etc. And, we have done some rather large outdoor projects in the past few years. Those costs are included here.
Still, that’s a lot of dough. Has this gotten way out of control?? Do I need to seek out a gardening self help program? It occurred to me that gardening is pretty much my only hobby for the past few years, so that makes me feel a little bit better. Plus, we get the added bonuses of fresh homegrown veggies and a property that looks nice (most of the time!). I do like to sew but I have plenty of fabric and other supplies in my stash from over the years to work with, so I rarely spend money on that.
I’ll be thinking on this for a while… What are you thinking about today?
