thoughtful thursday: too much is too much

August 8, 2019

So…it has been a while since I’ve done much meaningful reading. Summer is for the garden. That said, I’d like to get back to thoughtful thursdays and the tao te ching. I’m up to chapter 12.

In a nutshell, this chapter says to me: stop overloading! Too much is too much. When we stuff ourselves (in any way), we are hindered from moving forward. When there is too much to see, do, eat, listen to, it takes away from the things that really satisfy us by dulling our senses. It might even keep us from realizing what we actually need.

This ties in quite well with the minimalist movement that seems to be everywhere right now.

The following line from Robert Jankel’s version (Tao Te Ching: An Intuitive Interpretation) is a nice summary:
“Therefore, a spiritual person overlooks the dazzling and satisfies innate necessities.”

One of the best ways I’ve found to stay grounded and stay in touch with spirit is to sit outside amidst the trees, the birds, and the bugs. It sounds crazy, but the sound of the cicadas is soothing to my soul. I know that might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I sure am going to miss them when summer is over.

What are you thinking about today?

I totally needed to hear this message today, my friend. Thank you so much for sharing this much-needed wisdom. Outdoors is definitely where I find the best therapy (and most meaningful meditations).
