fall walks

One of my favorite things about fall is the perfect walking weather. Fall walks are full of things to delight the senses.

Changes in the sights and smells are the most obvious. Those lovely colors! And the smell of chimney smoke and bonfires. We live in an area where people burn their yard waste fairly often. The smell of the smoke reminds me of camping, bringing good thoughts and feelings.

What can be a bit subtler are the the changes in sounds. The ground can be “crunchier” with all the dried leaves lying about. If there is a strong wind blowing, it adds another layer of sound as it rips through the leaves. The bird song patterns change as well. And of course, some of the animal sounds disappear altogether. When the cold weather comes around, I dearly miss the sound of the cicadas and the frogs.

Even the sense of touch gets involved. The cooler temperatures and wind are felt on the skin. And all the extra layers of clothing too!

My Trixie dog loves the fall weather. Even though she is 12 years old this month, when the weather cools, she seems to be as energetic as a puppy. Even though she isn’t showing it in these photos!
