my go-to smoothie recipe

November 26, 2019

Greetings! Are you still harvesting spinach or kale? If so (or even if you’re not!), I’d like to share my favorite green smoothie with you. I’ve been making this one for what seems like a couple of years now. I don’t have one every day, but at least a few times per week.

This one is loaded with superfoods and it’s just plain “health in a shake”. I generally make enough for two shakes and will keep them refrigerated, drinking them over the next couple of days. Any longer than that and they start to get yucky.

So, I am not a food photographer by any stretch and it seems to be especially difficult to get a nice, artful picture of a glass of green smoothie. It might just be hard to make a green smoothie look pretty no matter what. Ya seen one, ya seen ’em all. My coworkers (not to mention the man himself) have certainly commented on how unappetizing my smoothie looks. But we are going for health here, right? Here is my best shot.

Regarding the ingredients, this is just what I choose to put in. You can certainly add, subtract, substitute with whatever items you like in a smoothie. The quantities below are enough for 2 smoothies; that is, two full Blender Bottles. You’ll need a high-powered blender to grind through all the ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1 bunch fresh spinach or kale leaves (I tend to alternate)
  • 2 scoops chocolate protein powder
  • 4 tbl powdered peanut butter
  • 2 scoops superfood powder (I use the LIVfit brand; we get it at Costco and Amazon carries it, too; here’s a link if you are interested. You could also just leave it out. We came across it one day at Costco and I’ve been using it ever since.)
  • 2 tbl hemp hearts
  • 2 tbl flax seeds
  • 2 cups frozen berrries (I use a mix of blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, blackberry; whatever is available)
  • 20 oz water (more or less; test the amount to see how the consistency comes out for you.)

Directions:

  1. Put all ingredients into the blender container and blend until desired consistency. What I’ve found to work best is to put the greens into the container first, as you may have to smash them down to make room for the other items.
  2. Then all the other ingredients go in. See note below.
  3. Blend.

Note – I put all my ingredients into the container before placing it onto the base, for safety reasons. Plus, I can imagine Murphy’s Law kicking in and somehow me ending up with green smoothie all over my ceiling. So, all ingredients into the container, then secure lid onto container, then container onto base, then power on and blend. What can I say? I do have my idiosyncrasies. The man will certainly attest to that.
