tao 21

December 5, 2019

Despite the lack of gardening posts, I’m back with the latest Tao te Ching post; namely chapter 21.

This is one of those iconic Tao chapters. I like that it tells us we only need to look inside and we will see (ie understand the Tao). Simple, not easy though. I think meditation is called for.

Speaking of meditation, one of my personal goals for 2020 is to begin and maintain a meditation practice. I went ahead and started early (today) and set a timer for 2 minutes. I think I did okay; although it seemed as if I was just getting relaxed and zoning out when the timer went off. Gotta start small though.

I like this verse from chapter 21 in the Mitchell version:
“Since before time and space were,
the Tao is.
It is beyond is and is not.
How do I know this is true?
I look inside myself and see.”

And this from the Jankel version:
“All the energy from life eternally follows the Tao.”

For some reason, this makes me think of water bears (aka tardigrades). If you are not familiar with these mighty creatures, watch “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey” presented by Neil deGrasse Tyson. As a matter of fact, it’s worth watching regardless.

Speaking of things that have been around forever, tonight is the anniversary celebration of the first date that the man and I went on, 17 years ago! Hope you are having a great week.
