Some of the best gardening advice I’ve been given over the years has come from personal friends and mentors. Second best might just be from podcasts. Oh, and books of course! But today, let’s focus on podcasts. I listen to many of them, on topics ranging from vegetarianism to religion to entrepreneurism to, you guessed it, home and garden. I’d have to say that my two favorite garden-related ones are: A Way to Garden (Margaret Roach) and The joe gardener…
i’m digging! portulaca
May 17, 2019This week I’m digging some annuals that I picked up, namely portulaca. Most years these are one of my mainstays for the few annuals that I plant. That, and petunias. Some years I might add something new to the mix. A few years ago I did a neutral palette with the annuals. But I always come back to color. Have a great weekend.…
thoughtful thursday: sacred moss
May 16, 2019I’ve always kind of felt that moss is special and was interested to learn that some believe that moss is sacred. I’ve been admiring some moss growing on what I think was used as a makeshift birdbath long ago. Ironically enough, I happen to be reading Cultivating Sacred Space by Elizabeth Murray. Her book is organized by seasons and I’d flipped to the section on Summer. This chapter covers twelve gardens, ones that have really spoken to her. The thing…
may garden activities
May 6, 2019Greetings, my gardening friends! We have a full month of “things to do” planned for May, following a busy April. I really messed up on the timing of some of my veggies and hoping it won’t be too impactful. Here is what we are working on this month – April and May are the two most active months in my garden. How about you? If you are on Instagram, let’s connect! Oftentimes, posting a quick photo of the garden is…
i’m digging! that summer feeling
May 3, 2019This week I am digging the warm temperatures! I’ve moved most of our houseplants outside and they are thriving. Some of them have new pots and I even moved one of our coral bells into a new pot. A little rearranging of the decor and voila! It’s so refreshing to have a new look for summer. Have a great weekend!…
“the wall” – it’s coming along
April 30, 2019So…you may’ve read a couple of my posts recently (one of them here) that refer to a retaining wall that we’ve been working on for several years now, off and on. We’ve worked on and completed so many other things while this wall was in progress. It wasn’t the most urgent thing, so it got attention in fits and starts. The man finished constructing it last year. On our project list for this year is to fill it in with…
i’m digging! redbuds
April 19, 2019This week I am digging the redbud trees blooming all over. We are working to clear out some scraggly overgrown areas around our pond and uncovered a redbud that we didn’t know was there before. The space was so overgrown, it was hiding the good stuff! This particular tree seems kind of scrawny. I’m hoping now that it has some space, it might fill out a bit. You can see a glimpse of the blossoms below. That thicker trunk in…
we were busy this weekend!
April 15, 2019Still going strong with spring cleanup and prep activities. Thought I’d give a little peek into what we’ve been working on over the weekend. We are expecting a large soil delivery (3 cubic yards!) and have a couple tarps set up so the crew can just dump it right on. It’ll be used to fill up the area inside the retaining wall to the left of the tarps and the new raised veggie garden beds. I also began transplanting some…
a look around
April 8, 2019As promised, I am trying to stick with regular property tours. Rather than a video this time (which is time-intensive and I just couldn’t swing it with everything else going on), I’m posting some photos from around our place. It was kind of an overcast day and there is still a lot of cleanup to do, as you will see. Things aren’t really looking their best, but they soon will be. Hope you enjoy! Have a great week!…
i’m digging! raised bed #5
April 5, 2019This week I am digging a brand new raised bed! This one is 3′ x 12′ and still needs to be set into the garden area. The man and I built this one yesterday (well, mostly the man with a tiny bit of assistance from me). I will do a post soon describing how we made this. We already have #6 in the works! They are easy peasy to build. Have a great weekend!…
