i’m digging! garlic sprouts

March 15, 2019

This week I am digging the garlic sprouts that have come up in one of our raised beds. Here is a close-up photo. Can you see them poking up through the straw? I planted these in the fall and it is so good to see that they made it! Have a great weekend!…

thoughtful thursday: music to garden by

March 14, 2019

Question for my fellow gardeners: do you listen to music while working in the garden? This question made me think…do I listen to music while I garden? Sometimes, but not always. And when I do, what do I listen to? Oftentimes, it is gardening podcasts that I listen to. I plan to do a future post on my fave gardening podcasts. But for now, let’s talk about music to garden by. A quick search came up with a bunch of…

fanning the seedlings

March 11, 2019

Still upping the seedling game, I’ve added a fan to my setup. The primary reason for using a fan is to maintain good air circulation, thereby reducing the risk of diseases caused by too much moisture. I’ve also read that using a fan can help the seedlings become stronger, sturdier. Intrigued by this, I looked into it a bit more. According to www.gardeningknowhow.com: “This tricks the plant into thinking that it is growing in a windy environment and releases chemicals…

i’m digging! the first seedlings

March 8, 2019

This week I am digging the first seedlings to pop up…tomatoes, brussels sprouts, and onions. One of the podcasts that I listen to regularly is The joe gardener Show by Joe Lamp’l. His episode this week is a gem, chock full of good tips on starting seeds indoors. Today I implemented one of the tips from this episode. He suggests that once the first few seedlings emerge, to go ahead and remove the clear plastic cover that was used to…

i’m digging! grow lights

March 1, 2019

This week I’m digging this grow light setup that arrived a couple days ago. The man and I assembled it tonight – easy peasy. I’ve never used grow lights before and I’m excited to level up my gardening game. This model is from Gardener’s Supply Company and is a modular system. This means that you can start with the base unit (which is what the above photo is) and add on later. The units stack onto each other. I’ve seen…

thoughtful thursday: gardening as exercise

February 28, 2019

I’m sure you’ve heard, as I have many times, that gardening can be a great form of exercise, and maybe you’ve wondered how true that actually is. I’ve done some digging and have some information to share with you. Before we get into that, let me preface by saying that the notion of “gardening is a good form of exercise” really depends on what we’re talking about when we say “gardening” and what our definition of “exercise” is. For some,…

seed starting time is here!!

February 25, 2019

It seems like I just put the garden to bed for the winter. And it still IS winter out there, technically. But, since it’s February, that means it is time to get the some of the seeds started indoors if I want them to be ready in time for transplanting. I finally got my containers cleaned and sanitized. I’m pretty sure I will not be using all of these containers this year, but some of them hadn’t been cleaned in…

i’m digging! my new shower curtain (it’s the little things, right??)

February 22, 2019

This week I am digging the changes we are making in our master bathroom. Back over the holidays, I’d posted a glimpse into the changes we are making to this space. And as projects sometimes do, this one grew! We were just going to replace the fixtures. Then I decided to paint, which required a new shower curtain, floating shelf, and wall clock, etc, etc. The fixtures have all been replaced and here is a very in-the-rough picture of the…

thoughtful thursday: a set of rules by which to live

February 21, 2019

I’m not talking about the “Leroy Jethro Gibbs” type of rules. I am referring to Chapter 8 of the Tao te Ching. If you’re not into that kind of reading, stay with me. I think you might appreciate the wisdom in this chapter. Chapter 8 is such a good one to me! I referred to it in a post a couple of years ago. I wasn’t really doing a comprehensive study on the Tao at that time, just kind of…
