looking back at 2018 in the garden

December 28, 2018

When the year is coming to a close, do you like to look back and take stock of your accomplishments (or sometimes, lack thereof)? I always ask myself “did I do what i set out to do for the year?”. Most importantly, how did it all turn out, did I enjoy it, and how can I do better in the coming year?

I am ending 2018 on a good note. We made a lot of improvements to our home and garden. If you are interested, here are some of the highlights in regard to garden projects.

Did some landscaping in the front area of our house. This was fun and very satisfying – immediate impact.

Added a trellis to one of our raised beds. This is a great feature for climbing plants. The man and I just thought it out and came up with a plan. Then (this is the most important part, haha!), we worked together to make it happen. Turned out great! If you are interested in learning how we built it, that is here.

The man finished a retaining wall he’s been working on for a couple of years now. It just wasn’t a high priority in the grand scheme of things, so it drug on a bit. But now that it is done, we both love it so much! Can wait to fill it with dirt and start planting!

We got a new riding mower. Ok, maybe this one was not a “feel good about our accomplishment” type of thing. But, our hand-me-down mower finally died, after many repairs over the years (thankfully, the man knows how to fix things and he kept it going for a while). This new John Deere mower is a game changer! It cuts the mowing time down from 4 hours to 2.5. Gotta love that!

We had a LOT of soil delivered in to use throughout the season. That in itself is not really anything to write home about. But, it was the first time I’d ever done this and I felt a bit better doing this rather than buying bag upon bag wrapped in plastic. Plus, it was SO nice having ready soil there any time I needed some.

And despite some weird weather, unpreparedness, and neglect, I managed to pick some veggies from the garden! Here are a few of them.

Another biggie this year, we (by that I mean, the man) built a new bridge going out to our pond. The old one was rotting out and had become unsafe to walk on. The new one is solid! Here is a full post on that.
