first frost!

November 4, 2019

By now many of you may have experienced the first frost for your area. We had our first frost of the season last Friday. While there was nothing in my garden that I was worried about, frost can mean bad things for a gardener. Or, it may just mean that there are steps we need to take to be prepared. My plan for the posts this week is to cover some of the various points regarding frost, especially as it…

brown county, indiana

November 1, 2019

This week I am digging the wonderful vacation we had in Brown County, Indiana and the great things we got to do. Hiked in the state park (a fave activity of our Trixie dog). Saw The Rocky Horror Picture Show (being Halloween week, there is so much going on here!). Shopped (but not too terribly much, I’m saving my money for a greenhouse!). Visited a distillery or two (Bear Wallow, Hard Truth…). Even though we are “beer folk”. We usually…

tao 16

October 31, 2019

Although I am away this week, there is always time for the Tao te Ching. This week I am reading chapter 16. This chapter tells me to Be at One. At one with the source At one with all beings At one with life At one with death I’m trying to quiet my mind to get there, and I have to say, as always, that being outside in the natural world is the only way I can accomplish this. We…

november in the garden

October 28, 2019

I can’t believe November is here this week! Fall is certainly upon us now. Those cooler temperatures are here to stay, at least until the cold sets in. I’m enjoying the weather, even though I miss my summer heat and cicadas. And even though things are a’changing out there, I still have a number of things to do out in the garden. Also, I’d like to add one other thing to November: get out there and enjoy the beautiful foliage…

it’s looking good!

October 25, 2019

This week I am digging the progress we’ve made on getting our new building ready for the winter. Although I love painting and consider myself to be the resident painter here in our household, I couldn’t have done this one alone. Thanks to a bunch of help from the man, we are getting it done. He is not afraid to get up high on the ladder for those 12-foot peaks on the sides. I have poor balance (another one of…

tao 15

October 24, 2019

I love this chapter describing the ancient Masters of the Tao. The descriptions in all three of the versions I am reading make them sound (to me) like a cross of Jedi, Mother Nature, the Buddha, and a tiny bit of Catwoman thrown in. All-knowing, cautious, fluid, patient, open, unpretentious. I think they must’ve taken the wait and see approach to life. Staying open, adjusting course when needed, doing the next right thing. Careful in their actions and keeping a…

garden update

October 23, 2019

There isn’t a whole lot to update you guys on this week. We are still waiting for the first frost. Last week we had what I would call an “almost frost”, meaning there was a very slight amount of frost on one window of one of the cars here. Nowhere else. So I’m not really calling that our first frost. Next month we will set out the bird feeders. We keep them out only during the cold months. There is…

fall walks

October 22, 2019

One of my favorite things about fall is the perfect walking weather. Fall walks are full of things to delight the senses. Changes in the sights and smells are the most obvious. Those lovely colors! And the smell of chimney smoke and bonfires. We live in an area where people burn their yard waste fairly often. The smell of the smoke reminds me of camping, bringing good thoughts and feelings. What can be a bit subtler are the the changes…
