Today is the day! The autumnal equinox. Did you know that the word “equinox” comes from two Latin words meaning “equal night”? Today, the length of sunlight and darkness is roughly 12 hours each for most of the world. This is a fun little read about the first day of fall. Hope you have a great week!…
some fall inspiration
September 20, 2019While I am whole-heartedly a summer person and hate to see it go each year, I do love the fall decorations. Such nice warm colors and all those textures! This week I’m digging the changes I’ve made around the house to celebrate the season. If you’re having trouble embracing the changing seasons (like I do!), hopefully this is some fall inspiration for you. I’ve mixed in a few Halloween-specific things. Closer to Thanksgiving, I can put the Halloween things away…
thoughtful thursday: bean counting
September 12, 2019I mean literally, counting beans. I’ve expanded my bean growing this year and the plants have done really well. Probably my best crop this year, in fact. The beans that I’ve harvested, I’m going to dry and save for replanting next year. This way, I will build up my seed “collection”, meaning that I will be able to plant more and harvest more each year until I do not have to buy bean seeds from an outside source any longer.…
september garden activities – 2019
September 5, 2019thoughtful thursday: autumn leaves are peeking out
August 15, 2019I am starting to see signs of autumn. Leaves are just starting to turn around here, just a few. It has seemed to me that in recent years many people consider fall to be here when school starts, which seems earlier and earlier each year. Personally, I like to hold on to summer for as long as absolutely possible. After all, it doesn’t officially end until late into September. And if the weather is still warm, it is still summer…
thoughtful thursday: too much is too much
August 8, 2019So…it has been a while since I’ve done much meaningful reading. Summer is for the garden. That said, I’d like to get back to thoughtful thursdays and the tao te ching. I’m up to chapter 12. In a nutshell, this chapter says to me: stop overloading! Too much is too much. When we stuff ourselves (in any way), we are hindered from moving forward. When there is too much to see, do, eat, listen to, it takes away from the…
in search of walkable ground cover
August 5, 2019Hi all! How is your August shaping up? I’ve been in the garden, planting some crops for fall harvest (kale, spinach, lettuce, parsley). I’ve also been racking my brain trying to come up with a permanent solution to the weed situation in the veggie garden. It’s fairly easy to keep the beds themselves weeded, but all the space in between has become an eyesore. Here is an overview- don’t mind all the buckets, I have plans for those. I’ve mulched…
august garden activities
August 2, 2019Wow, can’t believe we are already into August! July seemed to fly by, as we were quite active. We hosted our annual cookout. This is one of the fun things we do in the summer. We invite family, friends, coworkers over for a summer feast. It’s always a good time, although as luck would have it, this year it was extremely hot, upper 90sF. Since we are mostly shaded here, it wasn’t unbearable. We also spent a lot of time…
garden video tour
July 15, 2019Hi all! Hope your week is off to a great start. If you are like me and love a little peek into someone else’s garden, here is a little garden video tour I did this weekend. It starts off with a couple small landscape plantings I’ve recently added and then moves into the veggie garden area. Hope you enjoy! Have a great week!…
july garden activities
July 10, 2019In my zone 6 garden, July is primarily a month for maintenance. Here are some of the things I am working on this month. There is nothing ready for harvest at the moment- and likely not for a while. I was late getting everything in due to all the rain we had during the spring. What are you working on this month? Are you posting garden pics on Instagram? Come find me (@thewoodlandgardener)!…
